The METI Japan Internship Program 2026 is a fully funded, government-sponsored global talent initiative organised by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and managed by the Japan Internship Program (JIP) Office. Designed to foster the internationalisation of Japanese Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and strengthen global human networks, the program places international students, university graduates, and young professionals in host companies across Japan.
The program operates across two distinct tracks: Online (Remote) and In-Person (On-Site in Japan).

Selection Results Timeline:
Online Course: Final results announced late July 2026.
In-Person Course (Term 1): Final results announced mid-August 2026.
In-Person Course (Term 2): Final results announced early September 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet the following mandatory requirements to be considered by the JIP Office and host SMEs:

Age: Between 18 and 39 years old as of 24 August 2026.

Nationality: Must hold citizenship of an OECD/DAC-listed country or region (e.g., India, Brazil, Vietnam, Philippines, Kenya, etc.). Note: Citizens of the People’s Republic of China and applicants currently residing inside Japan are strictly ineligible.

Academic Status: Current university students (undergraduate/postgraduate in their final years) or university graduates.

Language Proficiency:

Japanese level of at least JLPT N3 / CEFR B1 equivalent, OR

High Business/Professional proficiency in English.

Career Intent: Must demonstrate a genuine interest in Japanese workplace culture, international business expansion, or seeking future employment/career opportunities in Japan.

Prior Participation: Applicants must not have previously participated in the METI Japan Internship Program from FY2016 through FY2025.
Functional Internship Domains
Internship projects are assigned based on matching an applicant’s academic/professional skill profile with the host SME’s overseas expansion plan:

Software & Systems Engineering: Full-stack development, IoT integration, system architecture, and cloud infrastructure.

Data Science & AI: Predictive modeling, business intelligence, market analytics, and operational automation.

Digital Marketing & Content: Global branding, cross-border social media strategy, SEO, and localized content production.

Business Development & Market Research: Competitor analysis, feasibility studies for foreign market entry, and supply chain strategy.

Product Engineering & R&D: Mechanical/electrical engineering support, CAD modeling, quality assurance, and manufacturing innovation.
Financial Coverage & Provisions
The METI Internship is a fully funded program supported by public government funds:
In-Person Track (In Japan)

Transportation: Round-trip international economy-class airfare to Japan.

Accommodation: Full accommodation arranged and covered by the program office.

Daily Allowance: Approximately JPY 3,000 / day to assist with daily living expenses.

Insurance: Comprehensive overseas travel and injury insurance coverage provided.

Logistical Support: Visa application support, pre-departure training, and local orientation.
Online Track (Remote)

Activity Allowance: Approximately JPY 1,000 / day for participating days (~80 hours total).

Technical Infrastructure: Internet connection and communication support.

Form Submission: Fill out personal details, language capability scores, education credentials, skill matrix, and statement of motivation before the 30 June 2026 cutoff.

Screening & First Interview: Shortlisted applicants attend an online interview conducted in English or Japanese with the JIP Office. (Candidates submit certificates of enrollment/graduation and recommendation letters upon passing screening).

Company Matching & Second Interview: The JIP Office routes applicant profiles to suitable Japanese SMEs. Candidates participate in a technical/functional interview directly with the company.

Placement Confirmation: A mutual agreement between the candidate and company finalises the match. Once accepted, placement commitments are binding.
