About the Role: Principal Data Scientist (Individual Contributor)

Microsoft is looking for an architect-level, customer-facing Principal Data Scientist to anchor its ISE team in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. This position operates as a high-seniority Individual Contributor under a 100% remote (0 days/week in-office) framework, offering maximum workspace flexibility while maintaining less than 25% regional travel.

In this role, you will lead the data science strategy for cross-functional engineering pods consisting of software engineers, data scientists, technical program managers, and UX designers. This isn’t a theoretical or pure research position; it is a highly collaborative, code-writing, and client-facing engineering role. You will dive deep into unstructured and structured data systems, invent new validation methodologies, write highly extensible code that spans multiple cloud features, and build operationalised AI models that run at massive scale. Furthermore, you will act as a trusted advisor to enterprise customers, helping them translate ambiguous business hurdles into concrete, ethically sound machine learning pipelines.

Key Responsibilities & Data Engineering Workflows

• Data Governance & Privacy Leadership: Oversee end-to-end data acquisition pipelines, ensuring data formatting consistency, identifying systemic data gaps, and driving rigorous ethics, safety, and privacy discussions regarding training datasets.

• Scalable Model Architecture & Evaluation: Evaluate complex ML models developed by the engineering pod, establish modelling best practices, build operationalised deployment pipelines that scale seamlessly, and invent novel evaluation metrics for predictive accuracy.

• Co-Authoring Extensible Code: Write clean, modular, and highly extensible code that integrates natively across multiple cloud features, applying advanced debugging and profiling techniques to optimise system execution.

• Technical Thought Leadership: Maintain a profound understanding of emerging industry trends, algorithmic breakthroughs, and multi-cloud technologies to contribute to Microsoft’s open-source assets and architectural pattern blueprints.

• Strategic Client Partnership: Partner directly with external enterprise teams to define technical milestones, assess their core data capabilities, and present pragmatic, high-impact AI strategies tailored to their unique infrastructure maturity.

• Mentorship & Best Practices: Act as a technical mentor to software and data engineers within the cross-functional squad, cascading best practices for data cleaning, statistical modelling, and MLOps workflows.

Candidate Prerequisites & Academic Qualifications

Minimum Education & Experience Tracks (One of the following):

• Doctorate (PhD): Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a highly quantitative field AND 5+ years of active, hands-on data science experience.

• Master’s Degree: In a matching quantitative/technical discipline AND 7+ years of professional data science experience.
