Role Overview

Microsoft is recruiting a Data Science Intern to join its engineering and research teams in India.
Designed for graduate-level researchers and advanced analytical thinkers, this internship places you at the intersection of business strategy, machine learning, statistical experimentation, and cloud product development. Working directly with global product teams, you will formulate mathematical approaches to solve complex customer problems, explore massive multi-source datasets, develop predictive models, and deliver actionable insights that drive product innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Problem Formulation & Modeling: Translate complex product and customer challenges into structured analytical problems, applying machine learning algorithms, statistical methods, and exploratory data analysis (EDA).
  • Experimental Design & Validation: Run large-scale data exploration, validate analytical approaches, design A/B test methodologies, and establish monitoring pipelines for continuous model refinement.
  • Stakeholder & Product Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and product leads to convert mathematical results into compelling strategic recommendations that improve product functionality.
  • Algorithm Innovation & Peer Review: Participate in peer code reviews, engage in cross-team research reviews, and leverage modern statistical and machine learning frameworks.

Eligibility Criteria & Qualifications

Educational Background

  • Required Degree Level: Currently pursuing a Doctorate (PhD) in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Preferred Degree Level: Currently pursuing a Master’s Degree (M.S. / M.Tech / M.Stat) in the above disciplines.
  • Academic Standing: Must have at least one additional quarter or semester of study remainingfollowing the completion of the internship.

Technical & Core Skill Requirements

  • Advanced Mathematics & ML: Deep understanding of statistical inference, predictive modeling, machine learning algorithms, and mathematical optimization.
  • Programming Proficiency: High fluency in Python, R, SQL, or standard data science programming libraries (Pandas, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn).
  • Communication & Synthesis: Ability to present dense technical methodologies and model outcomes clearly to non-technical business stakeholders.
