About the Role: Lead I – Data Engineering

Are you an experienced data professional looking to bridge the gap between advanced statistical modelling and enterprise application development? UST is hiring a full-time, permanent Lead I – Data Engineering to join its digital engineering group in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. This multi-disciplinary role is designed for senior analytical minds who excel at exploring complex datasets and embedding predictive algorithms directly into software applications.

As a Lead Data Engineer / Analyst at UST, you will work hand-in-hand with core application development squads. Rather than building static summaries or simple business reports, you will take active ownership of data-driven investigations. You will write clean, compute-efficient SQL routines, build advanced statistical models in Python or R, and deploy pragmatic algorithms—ranging from time series forecasting to project clustering frameworks—that directly power real-time application features.

Key Responsibilities & Advanced Data Workflows

  • App Dev Integration: Partner directly with software engineers and product teams to translate mathematical models and raw data patterns into functional application features.

  • Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA): Lead deep-dive data investigations on complex, messy datasets to answer open-ended commercial questions and map out data relationships.

  • Predictive Model Engineering: Design, test, and implement right-fit machine learning and statistical models—specifically focusing on Clustering, Classification, and Regression frameworks.

  • Time Series Analysis: Build and optimize time series models to isolate cyclical patterns, systemic trends, and predictive data shifts within historical tracking metrics.

  • Cross-Functional Communication: Create clear data visualizations and technical reports to explain complex algorithmic behaviors to both software developers and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Algorithmic Architecture: Evaluate incoming project datasets to recommend appropriate statistical solutions, ensuring systems remain practical and efficient without unnecessary over-engineering.

Candidate Prerequisites & Key Technical Skills

Successful candidates must combine solid data programming skills in Python/R with a practical, problem-solving mindset when handling unorganized database architectures.

Required Experience & Technical Baseline (Must Have):

  • Advanced SQL Scripting: Expert proficiency in writing structured SQL queries, joining complex relational tables, and optimizing performance.

  • Statistical Programming: Extensive experience using Python and/or R for structured data engineering, statistical profiling, and machine learning development.

  • Core Modeling Frameworks: Proven, hands-on experience developing Regression Analysis, Time Series Analysis, Clustering, and Classification models.

  • Algorithmic Exposure: Foundational understanding of building or tuning recommendation algorithms.

  • Spreadsheet Modeling: High proficiency with Advanced Excel for quick mathematical prototyping, complex formulas, and data pivot mapping.

  • Software Collaboration: Prior experience collaborating directly with software application engineering teams or deployment squads.

Preferred Technical Skills (Nice to Have):

  • Database Customization: Experience handling database procedural extensions using PL/SQL.

  • Enterprise Software Ecosystems: Exposure to .NET environments or Microsoft software development pipelines.

  • Advanced Machine Learning: Broader knowledge of modern machine learning frameworks, neural structures, or deep-learning model engineering.
