Power BI Developer at Tata Power

Apply for the Power BI Developer position at Tata Power in Odisha (3-6 years of experience). Drive energy analytics and dashboard engineering using Power BI, DAX, SQL, and Azure Data Lake.

About the Company: Tata Power

Tata Power is India’s largest integrated private power utility enterprise, operating under the renowned Tata Group umbrella. Pioneering the generation of electricity in India over a century ago, the organisation has established a major presence across the nation. Tata Power operates a diverse asset portfolio that spans mega thermal power plants (such as the 4,000 MW generation hub at Mundra, Gujarat) along with greenfield renewable networks, transmission systems, and retail distribution circles across major markets like Mumbai, Delhi, and Odisha.

The organisation relies on advanced data systems to monitor its generation capacity, track grid transmission efficiency, manage power distribution logs, and optimise renewable assets. The Data Science & Analytics division acts as a centralized brain, integrating operational technology streams with enterprise software to drive data-led grid reliability, resource planning, and infrastructure auditing.

About the Role: Power BI Developer

Are you a skilled data professional looking to deploy enterprise analytics for critical infrastructure systems? Tata Power is hiring a full-time, permanent Power BI Developer to join its growing analytics squad in Odisha, India. This role is designed for mid-level professionals with 3 to 6 years of experience (with a core expectation of 4+ years of strong, hands-on dashboard expertise) who hold a B.Tech/B.E. degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

In this role, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of executive-ready visual reporting engines. Rather than building simple spreadsheets, you will handle complete Business Intelligence (BI) lifecycles. You will extract and transform raw utility datasets across complex storage layers—including Azure Data Lake, Databricks, and SQL databases—write advanced DAX models, set up secure row-level workspaces, and optimise report rendering speeds for immense data arrays.

Key Responsibilities & Utility Analytics Workflows

  • Interactive Dashboard Engineering: Architect, build, and deploy high-performance dashboards and reports in Microsoft Power BI, focusing on usability and corporate design standards.

  • Advanced Data Modelling & DAX: Build enterprise semantic data models, map star schema relationships, and write custom Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) to compute complex calculated columns and KPIs.

  • Data Ingestion & Transformation: Source, clean, and shape unstructured operational data streams from multiple sources using Power Query (M code).

  • Multi-Source Data Architecture: Connect Power BI securely with diverse source platforms, including SQL Server, Oracle, Excel files, custom web APIs, Azure Data Lake, Databricks, and SAP BO/SAP HANA systems.

  • Performance Optimization: Diagnose and resolve dashboard refresh lags and rendering bottlenecks, implementing best practices to manage massive asset datasets efficiently.

  • Power BI Service Governance: Manage workspace access rules, configure automated data gateways, manage secure report-sharing channels, and oversee scheduled data refreshes.

  • Interactive UX/UI Implementation: Design advanced report navigation paths using drill-through parameters, custom bookmarks, interactive slicers, and multi-layered filters.

  • Change Management & Documentation: Prepare technical schema guides, data dictionary indices, and user training files for deployed assets while managing engineering tickets and support tasks.

Candidate Prerequisites & Key Technical Skills

Successful candidates must balance strong data engineering fundamentals with the ability to turn business requirements into simple visual tools.

Required Experience & Educational Baseline:

  • Professional Tenure: 3 to 6 Years of hands-on experience in business intelligence, data visualization, or data warehousing.

  • Minimum Core Experience: 4+ years of specific, deep development focus within the Microsoft Power BI stack is preferred.

  • Academic Credentials: Undergraduate Degree (B.Tech / B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering – CSE).

  • Core Soft Skills: Strong analytical problem-solving abilities, structured project tracking skills, and the communication skills needed to align with cross-functional business users.

Core Technical Stack Competencies:

  • Expert Power BI Stack: Total mastery of Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, DAX measure optimization, and Power Query data transformations.

  • Relational Database Competency: Strong proficiency writing SQL queries, understanding database schemas, and joining tables in relational database management systems.

  • Big Data & Cloud Environment Awareness: Foundational understanding of retrieving and mapping data from modern architectures like Azure Data Lake and Databricks.

  • BI Development Lifecycle Knowledge: Complete familiarity with data warehousing design principles, structural data modeling, and performance tuning rules for large enterprise data pools.
