Research at the Elite Level: Raman Research Institute (RRI) Visiting Student Program 2026

The Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bangalore offers the Visiting Student Program (VSP), a highly prestigious internship for students who want to move beyond textbooks and into the world of experimental and theoretical physics.

Unlike many internships with rigid summer dates, the RRI VSP runs throughout the year, allowing you to collaborate with world-class faculty on projects ranging from Astronomy and Astrophysics to Soft Condensed Matter and Theoretical Physics.

 Why This Program is Unique

  • Year-Round Flexibility: There is no fixed deadline. You can apply whenever you are ready to commit 4 weeks to 6 months.

  • Financial Support: Full-time interns receive a stipend of ₹13,000 per month.

  • Travel Reimbursement: RRI supports your journey by providing Sleeper Class train fare to and from Bangalore.

  • Direct Mentorship: You won’t just be an observer; you will work as a junior colleague to a Research Staff Member.

Eligibility: Who is Google Looking For?

RRI is looking for students with a deep-seated curiosity for how the universe works:

  • UG Students: Within 1–2 years of completing their degree (Engineering or Science).

  • Master’s Students: Currently pursuing or recently completed an M.Sc or M.Tech.

  • Research Mindset: Candidates must be seriously considering a long-term career in scientific research.

 Research Areas at RRI

Depending on your background, you could be placed in:

  1. Astronomy & Astrophysics: Studying stars, galaxies, and the cosmos.

  2. Light & Matter Physics: Exploring optics and atomic physics.

  3. Soft Condensed Matter: Investigating liquid crystals and complex fluids.

  4. Theoretical Physics: Deep-diving into the mathematical foundations of nature.

How to Apply (The “Direct Contact” Method)

The RRI VSP does not use a standard application form. You must be proactive:

  1. Identify a Mentor: Visit the RRI Faculty Page and find a researcher whose work excites you.

  2. Craft your Email: Send a professional email expressing your interest, attaching your CV and a brief statement of your research interests.

  3. Apply Early: It is recommended to contact faculty at least two months before your intended start date.

  4. Recommendation Letters: Be prepared to provide references from your current professors if requested.
