The Research Sciences PhD Internship pairs interns with Microsoft researchers and product engineers to advance state-of-the-art AI capabilities within the Azure SQL Database platform:

Core Responsibilities

  • Algorithm & System Optimization: Analyze and improve advanced algorithm performance on large-scale datasets for enterprise database systems.

  • Prototyping & System Building: Build scalable system prototypes applying machine learning, LLMs, and natural language understanding to data management platforms.

  • Original Research Agendas: Formulate research questions to bridge academic gaps, author white papers, and present findings to product and business units.

  • Cross-Group Collaboration: Partner with researchers and engineers to support technology transfer, internal tooling, or potential patent filings.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Degree Enrollment: Currently pursuing a Master’s or Doctorate (PhD) degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related quantitative fields.

  • Academic Standing: Must have at least one quarter/semester of degree program remaining following the completion of the internship.
